report

The following gives details of ways in which the grant has been of benefit to the work of our group.

  • The award was used to fund the Dundee City Tennis Tournament held on 28th September 2002.  The tournament encouraged junior players to be take part in competitive tennis at a local level.  This tournament increased involvement in competitive tennis for players at West End and the other Dundee clubs.  This forms a good introduction to and stepping stone for other tennis competitions and tournaments.  With this event planned to be held annually there is then more likelihood that these and future juniors will take part in other district, county and possibly national competitions.  .
  • At West End Lawn Tennis Club (West End) summer coaching sessions are held each year for junior players.  This coaching is open to members and non-members.  At the end of the sessions during 2002 all the participants in these coaching sessions were encouraged to take part in the Dundee City Tennis Tournament.  This gave a positive goal for the coaching and introduced an element of competitive focus.
  • The tournament was organised to give boys and girls equal opportunity for competition at two age levels.  The competition was held in the following categories.

o        Boys Primary School

o        Girls Primary School

o        Boys Secondary School

    • Girls Secondary School
  • The event was discussed and supported by the Dundee Tennis Development Group.  The other Dundee clubs also organise summer coaching sessions for juniors and they were invited to send representatives to take part in the tournament.  This activity helped with communication and collaboration between the clubs.  The Dundee tennis clubs are listed in the table below.

o        Broughty Ferry LTC

o        Craigmuir LTC

o        Dundee High School

o        Games Club

o        Nigel Watson’s TS

    • West End LTC
  • In the Dundee tennis clubs there are some 200 junior members.  Each of these juniors was encouraged to take part in the tournament.  This number was augmented by those new tennis players taking part in the coaching but not yet members of one of the clubs and conservatively this number is put at 50 for the Dundee area.  The total number of juniors who therefore benefited from this award and the tournament is about 250.  It is also considered that other tennis players, not in these junior categories, will have benefited through the collaboration encouraged within the Dundee tennis area.
  • The winners of the events are listed below.

o        Boys Primary School         Charlie Carrie, Nigel Watson’s TS

o        Girls Primary School         Hanna McLeod, Broughty Ferry LTC

o        Boys Secondary School Chris McDonald, Broughty Ferry LTC

    • Girls Secondary School Emma McLeod, Broughty Ferry LTC
  • A photograph of the winners, one of the runners up and the Tournament Director, Dorothy Proctor is shown below.

  • The trophies were presented by Councillor Charles Farquhar, Convener for Sports, Dundee City Council.
  • Organising this tournament at West End has lead to a self-sustaining tournament, which will be held annually.  The tournament is planned to take place again on 27th September 2003 at West End LTC and is now firmly placed on the Dundee tennis calendar.  All of the Dundee City tennis clubs will be invited to have their members and those non-members taking part in their summer coaching participate in this year’s competition.
